Insulation for Cryogenic and LNG Systems

It is important to consider both moisture and thermal management in cold application designs, like Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) facilities. Water vapor in ambient air is drawn to surfaces that are below the dew point. Once water vapor enters a cold insulation system, it begins to freeze and create ice formations. Ice formation in a cryogenic insulation system not only causes mechanical damage, it also reduces thermal performance. This can negatively impact process yields, reducing both unit and LNG facility performance.

Shutting down a process is costly, time consuming and negatively impacts critical production goals. When production demand is high, there is often no option but to continue processing in less than ideal conditions. Kaefer Energy and Aspen Aerogels are working together to allow remediation of cold process areas while a process remains online.

Kaefer Energy’s patented Dew Point Reduction System, known as DPRS, produces extremely dry air and supplies that air into a habitat or tented area. This creates an environment that allows for inspection and maintenance of cold pipelines and vessels while they are in operation. More importantly, it allows a facility to remove and install insulation material while the process remains in service.

Cryogel® Z insulation provides superior thermal performance in cryogenic and sub ambient applications. It delivers high thermal performance that enables a thinner design for improved space efficiency. It does not require costly and time-consuming expansion and contraction joints. It also includes an integrated vapor barrier ensuring rapid completion once the insulation is in place.

Cryogel Z insulation is ideal for both maintenance work and new builds, providing faster and safer installations with sustained long-term performance. The flexible blanket format allows for faster installation than traditional insulation options making it ideal for installation while a process is in operation.

This combination of benefits makes Cryogel Z insulation ideal for maximizing cold temperature performance and working with Kaefer Energy in their Dew Point Reduction System to allow insulation management while a process is in service.

Cryogel Z insulation is an excellent cryogenic insulation that offers protection against cold splash and jet fire, and acoustic attenuation in a thin, lightweight package. It is easy to install and can be used throughout a facility due to its flexible blanket format.

FAST AND EASY INSTALLATION: Cryogel Z blanket insulation includes as integrated, vapor retarder that provides redundant protection in an easy-to-install package. Cryogel Z flexible blanket insulation can be installed up to 30% faster than traditional insulation.

NO NEED FOR EXPENSIVE CONTRACTION JOINTS: Cryogel Z insulation blankets expand and contract at the rate of the underlying metal. This eliminates the need for contraction joints, saving both time and money.

DURABILITY TO WITHSTAND PRE-INSULATION OR DAMAGE DURING INSTALLAION: Cryogel insulation is extremely durable. It resists mechanical damage from tool drops and foot falls, protecting system assets both during the installation process and while in service.
